I’ve had my fair share of weird beers over the years, but few in recent memory caught me off guard quite like “Spot Hitting Yourself” from Spanish Marie Brewery out of Miami, Florida.
Spanish Marie is an independent craft brewery that’s built a reputation on small-batch, experimental releases and genuinely great can art. Named after a Prohibition-era rum runner, Marie Waite, the brewery leans hard into its artisanal, local roots—even as its beers (justifiably) make their way into nationwide distribution.
I picked this one up as part of a Packmule shipment, along with a handful of similarly curious cans. If you’re a Northwest local and into interesting beer, you should absolutely check them out—and tell him I sent you.
Let’s start with the can.
The artwork features Marie, the Spanish Marie cartoon mascot, dressed in purple and literally punching herself through a portal. It’s weird, dynamic, and impossible to ignore.

And look—I’m a sucker for fun can design.
Inside the can is a sour ale flavored with cola, blackberry, blueberry, grenadine, and cinnamon. It clocks in at a very reasonable 5% ABV. In the glass, it pours a blackish-gray color with a light fizz and virtually no head, giving it more of a hard seltzer vibe than a traditional beer.
The flavor is unapologetically cola-forward, but it drinks sweet, with the berry and grenadine notes nudging it toward something like a wild cherry Pepsi. The strangest element—if this beer can get any stranger—is the cinnamon, which lingers just enough on the finish to make you pause and take another sip.

On paper, this sounds like chaos. In practice, it’s surprisingly drinkable. The flavors are balanced, approachable, and far less gimmicky than you might expect.
Would I crush a four-pack in one sitting? Probably not. But “Spot Hitting Yourself” lands firmly in my “I’m really glad I tried this” category, and it absolutely makes me want to seek out more from Spanish Marie in the future. If you come across it and those flavors intrigue you, I’d say it’s well worth your time.
Final verdict: Spanish Marie’s Spot Hitting Yourself earns an 8/10, thanks to its novelty, flavor balance, and overall drinkability.
